ADA wheelchair ramp requirements

On Behalf of | Feb 3, 2025 | ADA |

Wheelchair ramps are often required under the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA). These ramps help ensure that businesses and public spaces are accessible to everyone. New buildings are typically constructed with ramps in place, but older buildings may need to be renovated and updated.

When making these updates or doing the initial construction, it’s important to note that there are specific regulations that must be met. The ADA outlines requirements for how a wheelchair ramp should be constructed. Below are a few highlights to keep in mind.

Continuous support is required

Handrails must be designed to provide continuous support along the entire length of the ramp. There cannot be gaps or areas where handrails are only on one side. They must extend along both sides of the ramp, even if the ramp has turns or deviations. The design must ensure the handrails are accessible from the bottom to the top.

Handrails must be at least 34 inches tall

The handrails on wheelchair ramps must be within a height range of 34 to 38 inches. If they are too short or too tall, they may function as guardrails, but won’t effectively support those who need to hold onto them. Ensuring the proper height makes the ramp usable for everyone, including both adults and children.

A slope ratio of at least 1:12

The slope of the ramp must not exceed a 1:12 ratio. This means that for every 12 inches of horizontal length, the ramp can rise by no more than 1 inch. A gentler slope may be used if space allows, but a steeper slope can be dangerous and may lead to injuries.

Ensuring compliance

These are just a few of the regulations to keep in mind when it comes to wheelchair ramps. If you’re facing disputes or allegations that your building is not ADA-compliant, it’s important to understand all your legal options and take the necessary steps to address the situation.
